SAS ECC Primary Intermediate Middle High

The SAS Mission

The Singapore American School is committed to providing each student an exemplary American educational experience with an international perspective.

WELCOME TO THE MIDDLE SCHOOL

Students in the middle school study core courses and electives that build on the skills learned in elementary school and enable them to succeed in high school. SAS offers one of the widest selections of middle school elective courses among international schools.

The core academic program includes instruction in four major subject areas: reading and language arts, mathematics, science and social studies. The reading and language arts curriculum provides a variety of writing opportunities ranging from journals, narratives and short stories to formal research papers. Written and oral work sharpens the students' vocabulary, spelling, listening and speaking skills.

The mathematics curriculum helps students become problem solvers and builds a foundation for more advanced math courses. The field and laboratory-based science curriculum focuses on physical and environmental issues and their inter-relationships. Students become actively involved in the scientific process as they investigate the world around them.

In social studies, middle school students study government and world geography, which includes the study of the people and culture of Singapore, ancient civilizations and American history. Students also take physical and health education each semester and experience instruction in eighteen different sport activity units, fundamental physical fitness training, and a variety of developmentally appropriate health topics.

Formal computer instruction in fully-equipped computer labs is an important part of the middle school elective curriculum along with music, art, home living, French, Spanish, Mandarin, dance, and drama.

There are many activities and clubs for students including but not limited to student government, swimming, photography, scuba, strings, tennis, art, computer, basketball, indoor and outdoor soccer, volleyball, ecology, dance, Knowledge Masters, badminton, and pickle ball. All interested children are invited to join the age-appropriate activities.

For one week during the year, middle school students participate in a Classroom Without Walls experience.
