The components and elements of the S.A.S. middle school are patterned to meet the unique needs of the 11-14 age group rather than modeled after a junior high school or elementary school.

Primary Priorities

A. Intellectual

Our goal is to meet the unique intellectual needs of our middle school students in the areas of content knowledge, problem solving, and critical thinking. To achieve this goal, SAS. is committed to:

  1. Cooperative planning among teachers;
  2. Flexibility for the teaching of interdisciplinary units as well as specific content curriculum;
  3. Emphasis on continued development of study skills necessary for academic success;
  4. Flexibility and variety in student grouping.

B. Social and Emotional

An emphasis is placed on the personal development of the student, including understanding appropriate values, interaction and cooperation skills, family life education, and citizenship. To achieve this goal, S.A.S. is committed to:

  1. Teacher-student guidance and interaction, including regularly scheduled small group meetings which address the social and emotional needs of students;
  2. A full guidance program staffed by professionally trained counselors to deal with student needs.

C. Additional Priorities

  1. A wide range of elective opportunities are provided in both academic and special interest areas.
  2. Opportunities are provided for develop- mentally appropriate physical activity and movement.
  3. An after-school activity program is available which includes clubs and sports, placing a primary emphasis on cooperation and participation.
